RVs are great for summertime road trips, but many families winterize and store these large vehicles come fall. If you’re preparing to tuck your RV away for the winter, here are some tips to help you prepare for the project.
First, you should perform a bit of cleaning and interior maintenance to keep your RV in the best possible condition, which helps minimize problems from developing over the season.

- Remove all food and drink (even non-perishables), valuables and soft items, such as linens. Wash these soft items so they’re ready for use in the spring.
- Wash the RV inside and out. Make sure the fridge, cabinets and drawers are free of food spills and crumbs. Then defrost the freezer and unplug all appliances.
- Leave out an open box of baking soda to stave off foul odors.
Next, it’s time to take care of your RV’s internal systems. If you’re not familiar with these tasks, have a mechanic perform them for you.
- Fill the gas tank and add in a fuel stabilizer. Run the engine for a few minutes so the stabilizer has a chance to travel through the engine system.
- Change the oil, top off fluids and pour in some antifreeze.
- Remove the battery to prevent freezing. You may need to periodically charge it during the season.
- Inflate the tires to the maximum recommended cold pressure.
- Turn off the LP gas supply valve and the main breaker.
- Empty the wastewater tanks, flush out remaining fluids in the tank drains and scrub down the holding tanks.
- Tape cardboard over vents to prevent mice, ants and other critters from entering and nesting in your RV.
Finally, it’s time to close everything up and tuck away the vehicle until spring.
- Park your RV either in your driveway or in a garage or storage facility. RV campgrounds and dealerships may also offer storage space for rent.
- Cover your RV with a high-quality cover made of breathable material that fits snugly.
- Either chock the wheels or remove the tires and store the vehicle on jacks.
Coverage shouldn’t be overlooked during storage. Call The Mike Dyer Agency for more information on RV insurance.
